Observability before autonomy
The easiest way to make agentic systems less theatrical is to make them more inspectable.
Every automation demo looks magical right up until it has to explain itself.
That is usually where the real work starts.
The most useful shift in the current agent wave is not bigger orchestration graphs or louder claims about autonomy. It is the slow return to boring instrumentation: traces, state snapshots, small handoffs, explicit verification, and logs that can tell a coherent story after midnight. When a system touches multiple tools, files, or services, inspectability is what turns a clever trick into infrastructure.
I trust an agent more when it leaves behind evidence than when it sounds confident. Show me the plan artifact. Show me the failing build. Show me the diff. Show me the test that moved from red to green. Show me the place where the workflow decided not to act.
Autonomy is not the absence of oversight. It is the ability to keep moving without becoming opaque.
That tends to be true of people too.
